Today, Mr. Barr is off and has left a post on the class blog detailing what we have to do today. He left a series of questions which must be completed, and once these are completed we have to continue working on our project.
In my project today, i will work on fixing up the layout of the site, as it looks a bit rough in parts. I am also trying to upload my database to the website, but i'm not doing it right and it isn't working.

Update
I haven't posted anything here lately, so I thought i would post today giving an update on my progress in my A2 Level ICT course. We are currently working though Module 4 theory using our textbooks, and at the minute we are working through 1NF, 2NF and 3NF. I am finding this section difficult, but i think i will get better at it over time.
As for my coursework, my site has been built and i am just awaiting to upload my database to it. I tried to in our last class before the Halloween break, but it never worked and Mr. Barr said he would help me after the break. So once i get the database onto my site, it will pick up from there!

18 Oct 2007 - Theory class
In todays theory class, I spent the lesson copying out notes from pages 214-216. The first section was about a fully normalised database, namely 1NF, 2NF and 3NF (NF = Normal form).
The second sections was about database locking; what it is and how it is caused. I got all this copied out in class, and our homework was to summarise section 4.1.7 on Page 216, and I got this done in class because I got all my classwork done on time. I spent some of my free lessons today watching Learn VWD videos (I watched another 15 minutes of the Lesson 2 video).

Today we were introduced to the Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition website. The website contains tutorials on how to use VWD 2005, and we were told to watch them. There are a total of 14 lessons available, and they aim to improve the users technique of using VWD. I believe these videos will be very useful for me , and they will really help me to improve my technique at using VWD.
From Lesson 1 I learned:
From Lesson 1 I learned:
- How to create a website and a webpage in VWD
- How to add VB and HTML code to the website, and how they are both integrated into the package so that they carry out the same function
- How to add buttons and labels, and how to change the functions of buttons
- How to add aspx.net pages

Website creation process
For the past few days, I have been working on developing my skills using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005. We have been building our own websites based on the 'Northwind Traders' sample database that has been provided as an example for our coursework. So far, we're learning the basic skills such as using tables as page template designs, learning how to add images, and learning how to link all the pages together. So far, my homepage looks like this:
It has a basic layout; it has an icon and a title along the top, a set of links down the left hand side, and a space in the middle to add text. I used this layout for all my other pages, for example this is my 'Products' page:
As you can see, the both pages have the exact same layout. I just copied and pasted the table into every page, and it saved a lot of time.
Linking the pages together was pretty easy. I simply created buttons along the side and added the names of the different pages onto the buttons. To add a hyperlink, you simply highlight the text and click on the small icon of a world along the toolbar, shown below.
That's all I have done for my website atm, but in our next class we will be uploading the Northwind database onto the site, so that the site can be used as an online database.

Coursework planning
Today I will be planning how the practise website we are creating will be laid out, using Microsoft Word. It will include things such as what pages will be included, all the links between each page, and the contents of each indivudal page.
---------------------------------------------------------

This is a screenshot of the page sitemap i created in Microsoft Word for the Northwind Traders website. The mint-green page is the Homepage, and all the other pages are linked to the Homepage. The table in the top right hand corner represens the page template design which will be used on every page. The smaller boxes underneath the individual pages represent the different sub-pages which will be linked to those pages.

Northwind Traders website
By the end of today's class, I will have uploaded screenshots of the completed Northwind Traders website which I have created using Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005. The website will contain 3 pages, linked together.

Letter to Mr. Barr - August 2008
Dear Mr Barr,
Thank you very much for helping me to achieve a grade “A” in m GCE ICT! To attain this grade I had to work really hard throughout the two years you have taught me. I always planned ahead when we were doing coursework, and I managed my time really well and that really helped me to achieve such a grade. I drew up my own revision timetable for the exams in January and June, and they helped me to prepare well for the exams to ensure I performed as best I could in each paper. The excellent performance in each test all added up and resulted in the grade ‘A’ I achieved. During the times when I was falling behind in my coursework, I always stayed in after school to use the high-quality facilities available to me and I worked on my coursework, and in the end I got all my coursework handed in on time and I got the highest mark in the class for my coursework. This year, I really settled down in comparison to last year, and this really helped me to improve on my AS level results. I gave my full attention during class and I always did what I was asked to do, and this is why I believe I have achieved a grade A in my GCE ICT.
I was also grateful for the help you gave me during the year, by giving us plenty of time on the computers to work on our coursework, and coming around the class and giving us individual help when we were struggling. Without this professional help I probably would have got a C or a D in my GCE ICT. I was especially thankful when you used different teaching techniques all the time to make theory classes more exciting and they really worked for me, and they helped me to learn more about the theory of ICT. All those extra revision classes you supplied after school also paid off. I believe my overall mark wouldn’t have been as high if you had not provided these valuable classes. This year, I really thought I was going to struggle in the coursework element of the GCE ICT course. But all the support you provided throughout the coursework has been really beneficial, and the extra support classes you provided out of your own time and effort were a huge boost.
My AS level result was a grade “B”, and although it is a good mark, I know I could have done a lot better. I decided to re-sit Module 2 in January and that brought my grade up to an A, which was really helpful.
Thank you,
Emmet McCallion
